What is Generative Engine Optimization?
Traditional search engines work by indexing web pages and returning a ranked list of links. Generative AI models work differently: instead of handing back a list, they read across many sources and synthesize a single written answer. When someone asks ChatGPT "what's a good CRM for a small agency" or asks Google's AI Overview "how do I fix a leaking faucet," the model composes a response on the spot, often naming specific brands, products, or businesses along the way.
GEO is the discipline of making it more likely that your business is one of the things the model mentions. In practice, that means making sure your content clearly states what you do, who it's for, and why it's credible; making sure that information is structured in a way machines can parse (clean HTML, structured data, unambiguous facts); and making sure your brand appears consistently across the kinds of sources these models draw on, from your own site to third-party mentions.
It's less about tricking an algorithm and more about removing friction — an AI model can only cite what it can clearly understand and trust. GEO is the work of making that understanding easy.
How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO optimizes for a ranked list: get onto page one, ideally near the top, and a searcher clicks through to your site. Success is measurable and positional — you can point to a specific rank for a specific keyword.
GEO optimizes for something closer to binary: does the AI's answer mention you, or doesn't it? There's usually no visible "position three" inside a generated response — you're either part of the answer or you're invisible to it, regardless of how well-optimized your site is by traditional standards. A business can rank first on Google for a term and still be completely absent from an AI Overview or a ChatGPT answer on the same topic, because the model is drawing on a different mix of signals and sources. The two disciplines overlap in places that matter: both reward clear, genuinely useful, well-structured content, and both benefit from a site that's easy for machines to crawl and parse. But they are optimizing for different surfaces, judged by different mechanisms, with different success metrics. It's also worth being upfront that GEO is a much younger field than SEO — the underlying models change frequently, and there isn't yet an industry-wide consensus on best practices the way there is for classic search ranking. Anyone claiming a fixed formula for guaranteed AI citations is overselling certainty.
Why GEO matters now
A growing share of research and buying decisions now start with a question typed into an AI chat rather than a search box. Someone comparing options for a service, a tool, or a product may never see a traditional results page at all — they'll read whatever the AI assistant tells them and move on.
That has a real consequence: if a brand isn't part of the answer an AI model gives, it may never even be considered, no matter how strong its traditional search rankings are. This isn't a five-alarm emergency — most buying journeys still involve traditional search, reviews, and referrals too — but it is a genuine and growing shift in where attention starts. Businesses that get ahead of it now are simply making sure they're represented on one more surface that's becoming harder to ignore.
