AI search is two games with different rules.

Treating every AI answer as one channel creates bad strategy. Google’s AI features are an extension of Search; answer engines such as ChatGPT and Perplexity require separate observation, even when the foundations overlap.

What are the two AI-search games?

Game one is earning visibility inside Google’s search system. Game two is earning mentions and citations inside answer engines that assemble responses using their own retrieval behaviour. They overlap, but they do not produce identical answers or expose identical signals.

Game 01 / Search AI

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Eligibility begins with normal Google indexing and search requirements.

Game 02 / Answer engines

ChatGPT, Perplexity, and similar tools. Results must be tested separately across real buyer questions.

Shared foundation

Accessible pages, clear entities, useful answers, credible evidence, and strong third-party signals.

Different scoreboard

Rankings and clicks for search; mentions, citations, answer share, and referral quality for answer engines.

Why is Google AI still an SEO game?

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a normal Search snippet before it can appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. That makes crawl access, indexation, internal links, useful content, and ordinary search eligibility foundational—not optional “classic SEO.”

Platform fact

Google’s documentation says its existing SEO best practices remain relevant and that there are no additional technical requirements specifically for AI features.

Why measure ChatGPT and Perplexity separately?

Answer engines can choose different sources and recommend different brands for the same question. OpenAI documents a dedicated search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, while other engines operate their own retrieval and citation systems. A Google rank therefore cannot be treated as a universal AI rank.

This does not mean search visibility stops mattering. It means the test changes: use a stable set of buyer questions, record which brands appear, which sources are cited, and how the answer changes by engine and over time.

One strong website can support every channel. One measurement model cannot describe every channel.

What do both games share?

Both reward a business that is easy to access, understand, verify, and match to the question. Technical health, focused service pages, direct answers, consistent facts, independent mentions, reviews, and credible sources all improve the information environment around the brand.

How should a business measure the two games?

  1. Track target pages, impressions, positions, clicks, and conversions in traditional search.
  2. Create a fixed prompt set based on real discovery and comparison questions.
  3. Record mentions, recommendation position, cited domains, cited pages, and answer accuracy per engine.
  4. Repeat on a schedule and compare movement against named competitors.
