Improving Bing discovery creates another path through which current pages can be found, while direct access for OAI-SearchBot supports inclusion in ChatGPT search. The useful strategy is to make both paths healthy—not to assume Bing alone controls ChatGPT results.
What do the platforms actually document?
OpenAI says public websites can appear in ChatGPT search and advises publishers not to block OAI-SearchBot. IndexNow documents a protocol that lets participating search engines know when a URL has been added, updated, or deleted. Neither statement promises a recommendation or a ranking.
Crawler access and URL submission are documented. The degree to which improved Bing coverage changes a particular ChatGPT answer remains a hypothesis to test.
How do you run the experiment?
- Verify the domain in Bing Webmaster Tools and review current index coverage.
- Confirm robots.txt and CDN rules allow Bingbot and OAI-SearchBot to access important public pages.
- Implement IndexNow correctly and submit genuinely added or updated URLs.
- Improve one page that directly answers a real buyer question and make its entity details and evidence explicit.
- Record the page’s Bing index status and the relevant ChatGPT answer before the change.
What result should you measure?
Measure discovery, citation, accuracy, and commercial response separately. A page becoming indexed is a technical success. It being cited is a visibility success. The brand being accurately recommended is a stronger answer-level success. A qualified enquiry is the business outcome.
