Mentions may matter more than backlinks for AI visibility.
A large Ahrefs correlation study found branded web and YouTube mentions were much more closely associated with AI visibility than backlink volume. That is useful evidence—but not permission to confuse correlation with a ranking rule.
What did the 75,000-brand study find?
Ahrefs found that branded web mentions correlated much more strongly with visibility across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews than backlink count or URL Rating. YouTube mentions showed an even stronger relationship in the updated analysis.
This is a vendor correlation study based on Ahrefs data. It shows relationships across a large sample; it does not prove that adding a mention directly causes an AI system to recommend a brand.
What is the useful interpretation?
AI visibility appears connected to the breadth and context of what the web says about a brand, not only to the authority passed by hyperlinks. An unlinked review, directory profile, comparison, podcast transcript, video, or trade-publication mention can help establish that the entity exists and belongs in a topic.
This reframes digital authority. The question becomes less “How many links did we build?” and more “Where is the market discussing us, and what does that discussion consistently associate us with?”
Does this make backlinks irrelevant?
No. Backlinks remain useful for discovery, classic search authority, referral traffic, and credibility. The finding argues against chasing link volume as the only authority strategy. It does not justify abandoning links or buying low-quality mentions.
The practical shift is from link building alone to building corroboration across the places buyers and machines already trust.
What should a business do next?
List the exact products, services, locations, and problems the brand should be associated with.
Find relevant reviews, directories, lists, interviews, videos, and articles where the brand appears—or should.
Correct inconsistent descriptions, categories, names, and claims across important third-party sources.
Track AI mentions and citations alongside rankings, referrals, branded search, and qualified leads.
